Nebraska Heart Receives National Accreditation For Echocardiography Services

The Nebraska Heart Institute and Heart Hospital, with locations in Lincoln, Grand Island, Hastings and North Platte, Neb., was granted accreditation by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Echocardiography Laboratories (ICAEL). The Nebraska Heart laboratories are part of the first one thousand echocardiography laboratories in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico to be so recognized for its commitment to high quality patient care and its provision of quality diagnostic testing.

Echocardiography, a noninvasive diagnostic test, has become one of the standard tools in cardiology with an estimated 10 million echocardiograms performed annually in the U.S. One American dies every 32 seconds of cardiovascular disease; a disease that stems from disorders of the heart and blood vessels. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S. costing more than 83 billion dollars each year in health services, medications and lost work time due to disability.

‘Cardiac structure and flow information provided by echocardiographic testing is useful in the detection and management of many types of heart disease,’ says Cyndie Hanson, Imaging Team Leader for Nebraska Heart. ‘Echocardiography is a complex imaging technique that relies on the experience and training of both the physician and sonographer.’

The interpretive and technical abilities of the sonographer and physician determine the diagnostic accuracy of an echocardiographic examination. The ICAEL has developed an accreditation program that evaluates the quality of these and other critical elements of an echocardiography laboratory. According to the ICAEL, ‘Accreditation status signifies that a facility has been reviewed by an independent agency that recognizes the laboratory’s commitment to quality testing for the diagnosis of heart disease.’

In addition to its Laboratories located on the Nebraska Heart Hospital Campus in Lincoln, Nebraska Heart provides echocardiography service to patients through Institute offices in Columbus, Grand Island, Hastings and North Platte as well as service to thirty-three outreach sites throughout Nebraska and Kansas.

‘Participation in the accreditation process is voluntary,’ says Hanson. ‘However, at Nebraska Heart, we continue to challenge ourselves to provide the best in care for our patients. Participating in the accreditation process supports this patient mission.’

The Nebraska Heart Institute and Heart Hospital provides unparalleled state-of-the-art cardiac, vascular and thoracic care services. Each year, Nebraska Heart performs more than 700 open-heart procedures, 2,000 interventions and more than 6,000 cardiac catheterizations. In addition to offices in Lincoln, Columbus, Grand Island, Hastings and North Platte, the 19 cardiologists and five surgeons visit more than 40 clinics throughout the region.
